Fall Classes

Here we go folks–get those needles ready!

Fall classes are as follows:

Socks (9/12 & 9/26) @ 7:00pm.  $50 plus supplies.  You’ll get a 10% discount if your supplies are purchased at Modern Yarn!  In this class you will learn how to manipulate double-pointed needles, turn a heel, create a toe, and how to do this all in any yarn you like!  If you’re not interested in socks, you can make a Christmas stocking.

Child’s Jacket (9/19, 10/3 and 10/17) @ 7:00pm.  $75 plus supplies (discount applies for supplies purchased at Modern Yarn).  Make a wonderful bulky weight jacket for your child (sizes 2, 4, or 6), or learn how to modify the pattern for your older child (size 8, 10).  This is a great first sweater project as it’s knit in one piece and there is minimal finishing.  And of course, there’s the WOW! factor when your friends see what you’ve created!

Mittens/Gloves (With our without fingers) (10/10 & 10/24) @ 7:00pm.  $50 plus supplies (discount applies).  Learn the basics of mitten construction and create your own mitten or glove, with or without the fingers.  A great class for beginners who want to expand their repetoire of knitting techniques, or for more advanced knitters who want to start designing their own patterns.

To register, call (973-509-9276) or email us at info@modernyarn.com.  Happy knitting!

Blue Sky is in the House!

Many of our summer visitors know that I’ve been absent for a huge portion of the summer, and Kristen’s been manning the store (with huge help from Christina, Kristine, Anne, and Katie); but now the baton has passed, and Kristen’s off for the next few weeks, and. . .I’m in charge!!!!

Anyways, one of the best things Kristen did before she left was secure the Blue Sky Alpaca trunk show. So it’s in the house now–stop on by–it’s absolutely beautiful. Of course, we’re still waiting on some of our Blue Sky order, but you’ve got to see some of these great garments. Everything is truely inspirational!

And while I was up at camp (Frost Valley YMCA camp teaching ESL to teenagers from Japan), I started, amended, and finished this great Morehouse merino (bulky) pea jacket. It’s for Rory, of course, but it will spend a few months at the store.

Lastly, our fall class schedule will be up shortly, and you can bet a sock class will be one of the first workshops we do. Stay tuned–our fall newsletter will be full of fun–fun yarns, fun classes, and super duper fun events!

Oh yeah, and a huge shout out to employee of the year, or maybe decade, Christina, for the wonderful present she left for me!!! Wow!!! I’m so hip!

Yikes, we’re closed today

Because of the explosion/fire yesterday.  I know, I know, we should have snuck under the police tape and stealthily opened up for business for the huge numbers of knitters anxious to get their fix on this kajillion degree day, but we’re not.

Police did say, though, that we should have power tonight, and if that pans out, we will be open on Thursday, and you can only bet that the stitch n’ bitch conversation will be lively.

BTW, I happened to be in the shop when the electric went, the manhole covers blew, and a huge cloud of black smoke chased campers and shoppers down the street.  Quite a site to behold.  I did not stick around to be told by the police to evacuate–I high-tailed it right out of there lickety split.  (You can call me chicken little, but that’s ok!)

So if you’re local and stuck on a project, you can find both Kristen and me at the Glen Ridge community pool (conveniently behind the Bottle King on Bloomfield Ave); drop on by, we’ll help you out!
